Counseling Corner

School counselors provide short-term, solution-focused support provided to help scholars address academic, social, emotional, or personal concerns. We work one-on-one with students to develop strategies for success and well-being. 

School counselors develop group sessions that bring scholars together who share similar needs or experiences. Topics may include friendship skills, stress management, self-esteem, grief, organization, conflict resolution, and transitioning through middle school. 

School counselors deliver engaging lessons that support students' academic, social-emotional, and career development. Topics may include goal setting, study skills, bullying prevention, decision-making, emotional wellness, and career exploration. 

Paul D. West Middle School supports and makes referrals to programs that connect scholars with positive role models who provide encouragement, guidance, and support. Programs such as REACH and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Men’s Mentorship. We continue to build partnerships to bring to our school community. 

The counseling department coordinates and supports a variety of school-wide and district-sponsored initiatives that promote student success and well-being. Programs and activities may include: 

• Red Ribbon Week 
• College and Career Week 
• Awards Day and Recognition Programs 
• Signs of Suicide (SOS) Awareness 
• Character Education Initiatives 
• Mental Health Awareness Activities 
• District-Supported Student Success Programs 

Counselors help students explore their interests, strengths, and future goals. We support scholars’ college and career readiness through a variety of targeted programs and activities, including: 

• Leading Bridge Bill classroom instruction to inform students about post-secondary education and career options. 
• Administering the Schoolinks assessment to help students identify their strengths, interests, and career pathways. 
• Offering the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) elective, which helps students in grades 6–12 prepare for college and career success. For more information about AVID, please speak with Ms. Cummings.

Family Ties Inc., is our in-house counseling service. Family Ties works with scholars and families to enhance their mental, physical, and social skills and strives to safely maintain children in their home or other permanent option. They provide high-quality mental health services to our scholars during the school day and offer additional support services as needed. If you would like to refer your scholar, please reach out directly to Dr. Edwards.
